On May 22nd, the conference We don’t need another hero! Timeless stories was held at the National Museum of Archaeology by the comics writer and editor André Oliveira – http://andreoliveirabd.blogspot.pt.
The Grave stele decorated with “Escrita do Sudoeste” was first presented by the archaeologist Pedro Barros from the Projecto Estela (EMEE workgroup member) with the aim of contextualizing the audience.
Then, while illustrating an informal perspective, André Oliveira began his lecture, drawing several parallels between the object – and its two main components: the anthropomorphic figure (possibly a warrior or a hero) and the Southwest script – and the comics’ creative process. Also, he explored the universe of (old and new) heroes in comic books.
It was a very creative (and different) approach on this archaeological object, much appreciated by the conference’s participants.
The afternoon ended with a guided tour to the exhibition ‘Europe through our objects’ to see in loco the Grave stele decorated with “Escrita do Sudoeste” and where the participants raised some questions on the object’s history and context.
It was a day to remember!
